Dr. Arjan Habraken

Biography

Arjan Habraken is an Assistant Professor at the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), specializing in lightweight structures. His professional focus lies in design work and collaboration with architects, which leads to extensive structural and architectural integration. Habraken aims to enhance the levels of structural form-finding while supporting both aesthetics and functionality within projects. His research interests encompass resource-efficient structural design, emphasizing the longevity of structures, the use of biological materials, and the development of material-efficient designs. He has explored key topics including section optimization, form optimization, topology optimization, and adaptive optimization. Habraken studied civil engineering at Delft University of Technology, graduating from the Department of Mechanics & Constructions in 1996 with an honorable mention from the Dutch Concrete Association. He holds a second Master's degree in lightweight structures from Eindhoven University of Technology. Alongside his academic role, he founded SIDstudio in 2012, working closely with architects as a structural designer. He is also a co-founder of MDLX, a company dedicated to developing sustainable modular building systems. Throughout his career, Habraken has managed and led high-profile international projects involving concrete, steel structures, glass, cables, and membrane structures. He actively publishes and presents at international conferences related to architecture and materials.
