Biography

Arjun G. Yodh is the James M. Skinner Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated with a BSc in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1981 and obtained his PhD from Harvard University in 1986, working under the guidance of Tom Mossberg. Yodh's professional career has been centered at Penn since joining the faculty in 1988, where he has also served as Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy since 2022. His research interests encompass both fundamental and applied questions in condensed matter physics, biophysics, and medical physics. Current studies focus on soft materials, colloids, liquid crystals, and various optical techniques applicable in biophotonics and biomedical optics. Throughout his career, Yodh has made notable contributions to educational outreach, mentoring over 100 PhD students and post-doctoral associates, and implementing STEM programs aimed at K-16 students. Noteworthy positions he held include Director of the Laboratory for Research in Structure of Matter (2009-2020) and William Smith Term Chair (1997-2000).
