Biography

Engaged for 2 years in 1969 by the Université de Montréal as a Teaching Officer under the France-Quebec Cooperation program, Arnaud Sales has been an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Université de Montréal since May 2009. From 1987 to 1992, he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, responsible for the sector of Letters and Human Sciences. He also served as Director of the Department of Sociology from June 2000 to May 2007. A pioneer in economic sociology in Quebec, his work focuses on the interface of economic and political social fields, particularly the relations between the public and private sectors; the relationship between business and society; the role of economic elites and highly qualified personnel; and the living conditions of students. He is known for his research on the representation of linguistic groups in private enterprises and public administration, as well as the challenges concerning the French language in a globalized economy. Throughout his career, he has supervised around 40 graduate and doctoral students. An internationally active figure, he served as Vice President for Research for the International Sociological Association from 1998 to 2002, and has held leadership roles in multiple research committees related to Economy and Society. In 2006, he was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Academic Palms by the French Minister of National Education.
