Dr. Arne Effenberger

Biography

Arne Effenberger is a noted Honorary Professor of Byzantine Art History at Free University Berlin. He has an extensive academic background including a PhD from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, with expertise in Byzantine art history, especially in the historical topography of Constantinople-Istanbul and Byzantine sculpture and small arts. His career includes significant roles in various Berlin museums, including his directorship of the Early Christian-Byzantine Collection and the Sculpture Collection and Museum of Byzantine Art at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Effenberger has been involved in numerous exhibitions relating to Byzantine art and has published a wealth of scholarship surrounding Byzantine history and culture, including investigations into the constantinian wall and the urban history of Constantinople. He also holds teaching history at several prominent universities including Humboldt University Berlin and Philipps University Marburg. His research interests encompass the breadth of Byzantine cultural contributions from its inception to contemporary interpretations, with collaborative works often shared with his wife, Dr. Neslihan Asutay-Effenberger. Effenberger's continuous engagement with museum services and academia marks him as a significant figure in the field.
