Biography

Prof. Skerra engages in research in the field of protein engineering design, focusing on the construction of artificial binding proteins and enzymes with novel, tailored functions for applications in medical and industrial biotechnology. His work employs rational combinatorial research approaches, alongside protein biochemical and spectroscopic methods, as well as protein crystallographic analyses. Several of his laboratory's technologies have entered commercialization, including Strep-tag®, Anticalin® proteins, and PASylation®. Prof. Skerra obtained his doctorate from the Gene Centre of Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1989 and completed his lecturer qualification in biochemistry at the University of Frankfurt am Main in 1995. He has held a full professorship at the Technical University of Munich since 1998, previously serving as a professor of protein chemistry at TU Darmstadt from 1994 to 1998. He is the founder of Pieris Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and XL-protein GmbH, and in 2008 was elected to the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He has been active in various scientific organizations, including the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the German Chemical Society.
