Biography

Arno Akkermans is the director of the Amsterdam Law Behavior Institute (A-LAB) and program leader of the Amsterdam Centre Comprehensive Law (ACCL). A-LAB brings together various faculties of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement to conduct interdisciplinary research in the field of law and behavior. The goal of ACCL is to enhance the legal system's responsiveness to a broader spectrum of human needs and motivations, such as justice, acknowledgment, and restorative approaches. Akkermans holds degrees (cum laude) in law from Tilburg University and has been a professor of civil law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 1999. His research focuses on the impact of law on individual health and well-being, especially in civil procedures related to personal injury claims. He collaborates with multidisciplinary teams at Vrije Universiteit’s Faculty of Psychology and the medical center, aiming to innovate empirical-legal research methods. Additionally, Akkermans is involved in various networks and committees related to law and accountability, including the International Network on Apology Law Research.
