Dr. Aron Fisher

Biography

Aron B. Fisher is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Physiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His major research interests focus on investigating pathways responsible for the generation of reactive oxygen species and understanding their role in cell signaling and oxidant stress. His current research is directed towards the response of the lung to altered blood flow, such as lung ischemia and reperfusion. His laboratory experiments often utilize isolated perfused lung models in rats and mice, adapting isolated endothelial cells to laminar flow. He has conducted extensive studies on peroxiredoxin 6, a unique bifunctional enzyme that exhibits glutathione peroxidase and phospholipase A2 activities, which serves a vital role in antioxidant defenses in the lung and in the turnover of surfactant phospholipids. Through his research, Dr. Fisher has elucidated the structure-function relationships of this protein, leading to significant insights into the physiological roles of peroxiredoxin 6 in lung health and disease.
