Arthur Lupia is the Vice President for Research Innovation and a Gerald R. Ford Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan. His research clarifies how people make decisions to form and break coalitions in complex political environments. Lupia has held a wide range of leadership positions within science-focused institutions, including serving as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation from 2018 to 2022, where he led the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate. He is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Strategic Council on Research Excellence, Integrity, and Trust, and serves on the Advisory Board of NASEM’s Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Lupia has been honored with the William O. Baker Award for Initiatives in Research from NASEM and has received Guggenheim and Carnegie Fellowships. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
