Biography

Arto V. Nurmikko is the L. Herbert Ballou University Professor of Engineering and a Professor of Physics at Brown University. He hails from Finland and has received degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and conducted postdoctoral work at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and MIT. His research primarily focuses on neuroengineering, photonics, microelectronics, and nanosciences with a strong emphasis on developing new technologies for physical life science applications, especially in device science related to implantable neural interfaces. Nurmikko has published over 400 journal articles and has led multi-institutional research teams while advising various federal funding agencies. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Optical Society of America. His prestigious accolades include the Guggenheim Fellowship and being elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Finland. In 2023, he received an honorary doctorate from Aalto University in Helsinki. His current research interests are also inclusive of developing implantable wireless neural interfaces and nanoscale neural circuit sensors, along with compact semiconductor lasers and acoustic microscopy in biomedical applications.
