Professor Macchi completed his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Applied Science at École Polytechnique de Montréal and attended the University of British Columbia for his PhD. During his graduate studies, he worked on a variety of fundamental and applied projects in multiphase reaction engineering, including drying and granulation of sludge slurries in spouted beds for Gaz Métro and hydrodynamic scaling of high-pressure foaming in three-phase fluidized beds for Syncrude Canada Ltd. His research also included a kinetic study of a vanadium phosphorus oxide catalyst used in the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride for E.I. du Pont de Nemours. His current research continues to focus on multiphase reaction engineering, emphasizing fluidized beds, transport phenomena in high-pressure multiphase reactors, micro-channels, synthesis gas hydrates, and CO2 capture from flue gas in combustor/gasifier dual fluidized bed systems using limestone.
