Dr. Arturo Vargas Bustamante

Biography

Arturo Vargas Bustamante is a Professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, specifically within the Department of Health Policy and Management. He serves as the Faculty Research Director at the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute. His primary research focus revolves around healthcare access and utilization, especially amongst Latino and Hispanic immigrant populations in the United States. Bustamante has significantly contributed to international health research, chronic care management, and primary care settings. His expertise encompasses healthcare disparities, health policy, health services research, and program policy evaluation. His work has been published in numerous esteemed health policy journals such as Health Affairs, Health Services Research, and Social Science & Medicine, and has garnered funding from notable organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He holds a PhD in Public Policy, an MA in Economics, and an MPP from the University of California, Berkeley, and he has previous consulting experience with the Inter-American Development Bank, in addition to working in the Mexican Ministry of Health. Bustamante is affiliated with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and has played a significant role in addressing health policy challenges emerging from shifting demographics.
