Biography

Arul Chib is a Professor at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research investigates the role of emerging information communication technologies as transformative tools in resource-constrained environments, focusing on the socio-structural contexts in which social change occurs. His current research examines agency and the innovative use of digital technologies within marginalized communities. Programmatically, Dr. Chib studies two broad domains: healthcare settings in developing countries and the context of transnational migration. His contributions to research, mentorship, and teaching have significantly advanced the field of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) in the Global South. He has received several recognitions for his work, including the 2011 Scopus Award for Sustainable Development and the Humboldt Fellowship. In 2020, he served as Co-Editor for the journal Gender, Technology, Development and is a member of various editorial boards including Human Communication Research. His engagement with diversity, equity, and access efforts is highlighted by his role on the committee of the International Communication Association. He has lived and worked in multiple countries including India, Germany, the Netherlands, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States.
