Arumugam Manthiram obtained his Ph.D. in Solid State Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1986 as a postdoctoral researcher and became an Assistant Professor in 1991. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and holds the Charlotte Maer Patton Centennial Fellowship in Engineering since 1998. Manthiram is an active participant in the Materials Science Engineering Graduate Program at the Texas Materials Institute, which is an interdisciplinary research unit. His research spans a wide range of problems at the interface of materials, chemistry, and engineering, focusing on the design, chemical synthesis, characterization, and performance of advanced materials. He is heavily involved in developing new materials for electrochemical power sources such as lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells, as well as synthesis processes for oxygen separation membranes, fine magnetic particles, and nanomaterials. He has published over 190 papers in the area of Materials Science and Engineering.
