Biography

Arvand Mirsafian is a Jan Wallander Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge. He is an economic historian with a particular interest in the interplay between technological change and labour-business relations. Before joining Cambridge, he completed his PhD in 2024 at Uppsala University, where his dissertation examined how the Swedish trade union movement responded to new technologies and the principles of scientific management during the interwar period. These responses significantly contributed to what became known as the 'Swedish labour market model.' He has taught extensively at Uppsala University on topics related to 20th-century economic history. His research has transitioned towards historical political economy, with a particular focus on the role of international organizations in shaping the global economy throughout the 20th century. His current project investigates the interwar efforts to stabilize the world economy, especially initiatives by the League of Nations and the International Labour Office aimed at raising labour productivity. At Cambridge, Mirsafian helps convene Labour History Cluster seminars and is open to collaborations with colleagues and students interested in these themes.
