Arwen Altenburg graduated in 2013 from Utrecht University in the Netherlands with an MSc degree in Infection & Immunity. Part of the MSc program involved research internships in the labs of Prof. Linde Meyaard at UMC Utrecht and Prof. Hidde Ploegh at the Whitehead Institute in Boston, USA. In 2018, Arwen obtained a PhD degree from Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, under the supervision of Prof. Guus Rimmelzwaan and Dr. Rory de Vries, where the focus was on the properties of the modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) vaccine platform and its applications in developing MVA-based influenza vaccine candidates capable of inducing broadly protective immune responses. Following this, Arwen joined the lab of Prof. Geoffrey Smith at the University of Cambridge as a postdoctoral researcher and later moved to Prof. Louise Boyle’s group in October 2020, working on characterizing TAPBPR function. In January 2023, Arwen received the Wellcome Early-Career Award to research MHC-I antigen processing and presentation, as well as viral immune detection and evasion. The research focus includes the dynamics of Major Histocompatibility Complex class I molecules in orchestrating immune responses towards tumors and pathogen-infected cells.
