Dr. Åsa Mäkitalo

Biography

Åsa Mäkitalo is a Professor at the University of Gothenburg. She has a background in human resource organization studies and has served as a co-director for the LinCS, CoE Research Learning, from 2006 to 2018. Mäkitalo’s research focuses on institutional communication, emphasizing the collective maintenance and development of institutional forms of knowledge. Her work critically analyzes participants' methods of organizing and coordinating activities, particularly in the context of sense-making practices that arise from new dilemmas and challenges. Åsa has held a professorship in Workplace Learning at the University of Oslo from 2020 to 2022, where she coordinated the HEDWORK research group, focusing on research related to higher education and work life. In 2023, she returned to her position at Gothenburg to oversee PhD studies within her department. Her research interests include the transformation of expertise through technology, the social organization of learning, and the moral and cognitive dimensions of accountability in education and care settings.
