Dr. Ashfaq Shuaib

Biography

Dr. Ashfaq Shuaib is a prominent figure in the field of neurology, serving as a Professor and Director of the Division of Neurology at the University of Alberta. With a medical education from Khyber Medical College in Pakistan, he further honed his skills in Internal Medicine and Neurology through postgraduate training at the University of Calgary. His commitment to cerebrovascular research was cultivated during his time at the University of Western Ontario and Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Shuaib’s research focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind cerebral ischemia and advancing clinical trials in cerebrovascular diseases. Throughout his career, he has published over 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals and garnered substantial research funding, including support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta. Dr. Shuaib leads the University of Alberta Stroke Program, which pioneered the stroke ambulance initiative in Alberta, optimizing stroke care delivery. He actively participates in several large multicenter acute stroke trials and chairs the National Stroke Program's Residents’ Review Course. His dedication to clinical education is reflected in the extensive training program he oversees, which annually trains multiple neurologists in stroke specialization, making it one of Canada’s largest instructional programs in this critical discipline.
