Biography

Ashish Koul specializes in the history of South Asia from the eighteenth century to the present. His research investigates the historical processes through which collective identities take shape and transform within colonial and post-colonial contexts. His current book project, provisionally entitled “Caste Reinvented: Arains, Islam, Politics in Twentieth Century South Asia,” examines the intertwining of caste, religion, and politics in the historical trajectory of the South Asian Muslim community known as the Arains. Paying attention to changing ideas of history, genealogy, religious practice, and political representation, the book analyzes the articulations of Arain identity during a period when the community and the South Asian region witnessed a transition from British colonial rule to post-colonial nationhood.
