Ashley Lucas is a Professor of Theatre & Drama in the Residential College at the University of Michigan. She serves as the Director of the Latina/o Studies Program and the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP), and is a founding member of the Carceral State Project. Lucas holds a B.A. in Theatre Studies and English from Yale University, and a joint Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies and Theatre Drama from the University of California, San Diego. Her research and teaching interests focus on U.S. Latina/o theatre, prison theatre, and social change. Between 2013 and 2019, she directed the PCAP Brazil Exchange program, which took students to work inside prisons, hospitals, and favelas. In 2023, Lucas collaborated with students and formerly incarcerated performers to form Dropped Keys Theatre Company, which produced the devised play "Love" that toured Michigan. She has authored the ethnographic play "Doin’ Time: Visiting Glass" and published the book "Prison Theatre Global Crisis Incarceration" in 2020, which explores the use of theatre by incarcerated individuals.
