Biography

Ashley Lucas is a Professor of Theatre and Drama at the University of Michigan, where she also teaches in the Residential College and holds a joint appointment in the Department of American Culture and the Department of English Language and Literature. She is the Director of the Latina/o Studies Program and the founding director of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP). Lucas’s research and teaching interests include U.S. Latina/o theatre, prison theatre, and social change. She authored the ethnographic play 'Doin’ Time: Visiting Glass,' and her book 'Prison Theatre: Global Crisis of Incarceration' examines the ways in which incarcerated individuals use theatre to counteract dehumanizing forces in prison. Lucas has published articles in leading journals and collaborated on edited volumes focused on gender and criminal justice. She has also run the PCAP Brazil Exchange program, facilitating theatre work in various Brazilian social settings.
