Dr. Ashraf Kitmitto

Biography

Ashraf Kitmitto is a Professor of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Sciences at the University of Manchester, UK. He completed his BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry at Cardiff and proceeded to earn a PhD in Biochemistry from Imperial College London. Kitmitto has over a decade of experience in the field, where he has focused on understanding the link between obesity, diabetes, and cardiac function. His research group investigates the structural and molecular changes in the heart due to obesity-related stressors and aims to identify novel therapeutic targets to combat metabolic dysfunction and heart failure. He has received multiple awards from the British Heart Foundation and has a strong background in electron microscopy and imaging techniques to explore cardiac dysfunction at a cellular level. In addition to his research, Kitmitto is heavily involved in teaching within the medical curriculum, where he supervises postgraduate students and is a programme director for the MSc in Cardiovascular Health & Disease. His work is crucial to advancing our understanding of the intersection between obesity and cardiac health, particularly in developing innovative strategies for preventing disease progression.
