Biography

Ashton Kingdon’s research is interdisciplinary, combining criminology, history, and computer science to explore the ways extremists utilize technology for recruitment and radicalization, while giving equal weight to the subcultural elements of technology users. He examines the ways in which history has been manipulated and weaponized to fuel contemporary extremist narratives. Kingdon has taught widely in areas of criminology, security theory, politics, international relations, and terrorism studies. Over the past years, he has advised UK, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian governments, law enforcement agencies, the military, and the United Nations on the risks posed by extremists operating online. In addition to studying the extremists' use of technology for recruitment and radicalization, his expertise lies in analyzing the relationship between existing terrorism and climate change.
