Biography

Ashton M. Shortridge is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Geography at Michigan State University. Growing up in Michigan and raised as a Hoosier, Shortridge developed a passion for geography at an early age. He took a course in computer cartography during his final undergraduate year at Indiana University, which sparked his enthusiasm for GIS. Throughout the late 1990s, he lived in Santa Barbara while obtaining his Master's and Doctoral degrees in Geography. Shortridge joined the MSU Geography Department in January 2001, where he has devoted his professional life to developing various GIScience degree programs. He teaches innovative courses in GIS and spatial analysis, and conducts a range of research projects that are both thematic and methodologically oriented. He is married with two wonderful daughters, and values family time highly. True to his Indiana roots, he maintains a basketball goal in his backyard.
