Biography

Ashwin K. Iyer received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Ontario, Canada, in 2009. He joined the faculty of the University of Alberta Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the fall of the same year and now holds the title of Professor. As a Founding Director of the Centre for Applied Research in Defence Dual-use Technologies (CARDD-Tech) and the Microwave, Millimetre-wave, MetaDevices (M3) Laboratory, he leads multiple projects involving compact soldier-worn sensors and low-SWaPC antenna sensor platforms. Dr. Iyer has trained 24 graduate students, 5 postdoctoral fellows, and 2 research associates and has co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications. He holds 3 issued and 4 pending Canadian patents and has been recognized as a Senior Member of IEEE and the International Union of Radio Science. His research interests include electromagnetics, RF/microwave engineering, and biomedicine, focusing on the development of multifunctional properties in low-profile and compact designs. Dr. Iyer has received notable awards including the R.W.P. King Award and several teaching excellence awards from the University of Alberta and IEEE.
