Dr. Ashwini Vasanthakumar

Biography

Ashwini Vasanthakumar is an Associate Professor and Queen’s National Scholar at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, specializing in Legal Political Philosophy. She holds degrees from prestigious institutions, including an A.B. from Harvard, M.A. from the University of Toronto, J.D. from Yale Law School, and a DPhil from Oxford. Vasanthakumar has served at various esteemed institutions such as King’s College London, University of York, University of Oxford, and Jindal Global Law School. Her research focuses on analytic political legal theory, exploring themes such as political authority, membership, and obligation. She has authored a monograph titled 'Ethics Exile', which examines political theory within the context of diaspora, published by Oxford University Press in late 2021. Current projects include investigations into the legitimacy of privatization in border control and the roles of victims in resisting oppression, underpinned by significant awards like the SSHRC Insight Development Grant and the British Academy Rising Star Award. Vasanthakumar continues to publish in various academic journals and is actively involved in teaching topics related to Contracts and Legal & Political Thought.
