Asiya Gusa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University. Her research focuses on understanding how environmental fungi adapt and respond to stress, survive the environment-to-host transition, and develop drug resistance, contributing to persistent human diseases. Dr. Gusa employs a variety of tools including phenotypic assays, whole-genome sequencing, quantitative PCR, and microscopy to characterize the genetic and cellular changes that occur in Cryptococcus in response to environmental cues such as heat stress and fluctuations in pH and nutrient availability. She is a Graduate Faculty Member of the University Program in Genetics and Genomics and the Cell and Molecular Biology Program. Dr. Gusa has been awarded multiple grants from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research for her innovative research on fungal pathogens.
