Biography

Astrid Runggaldier is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. She has extensive experience in Mesoamerican archaeology and architecture, with a particular focus on Maya culture, material culture, and the built environments of ancient civilizations in the Americas. Runggaldier holds a doctorate in archaeology from Boston University, where her dissertation focused on the architecture of the Maya site San Bartolo. She has conducted fieldwork in Guatemala and Belize and has led study abroad programs in Central America. Since joining UT Austin in 2012, she has served in various roles including lecturer and faculty leader for international programming. From 2015, she managed daily operations and special initiatives at the Mesoamerica Center and Casa Herrera, where she was appointed Assistant Director. In 2024, she will lead the Art History Honors program as faculty advisor, overseeing undergraduate honors theses. Additionally, Runggaldier curates the Pre-Columbian artifacts and ethnographic textiles within the UT Art and Art History Collection and contributes to several academic programs related to Latin American studies and Native American studies.
