Biography

Astrid Van Oyen is a professor at Radboud University specializing in archaeology, with a focus on the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of Roman Italy. Her research particularly examines the socio-economic history of non-elites within the Roman Empire and the complex interactions of craft production and rural economies. She is the author of the recent book, 'Socio-Economics of Roman Storage: Agriculture, Trade, Family' (Cambridge University Press, 2020), which analyzes the implications of storage practices in ancient sites across Italy and Gaul. Additionally, she co-edited 'Materialising Roman Histories' (Oxbow, 2017), which investigates Roman archaeology through the lens of artifact studies and big historical narratives. Prior to her tenure at Radboud University, she served as an Associate Professor at Cornell University. She co-directs the Marzuolo Archaeological Project in Tuscany, Italy, a collaborative endeavor examining rural craft sites and exploring themes of innovation and connectivity within rural communities. Van Oyen has been awarded fellowships at Homerton College, Cambridge, and the Stanford Humanities Center, contributing significantly to the fields of Roman archaeology and archaeology theory.
