Atakelty Hailu is an agricultural resource economist with a strong early desire to become a scientist, particularly in the field of economics. His interest in the intersection of people and nature, especially agriculture, was sparked by the devastating Ethiopian famine of 1984/1985, leading him to pursue studies in Agricultural Economics. He earned his BSc in Agricultural Economics from Alemaya University in 1990. Following several years at Alemaya, he moved to Canada to study for his master’s degree at the University of Alberta, where he was encouraged by his supervisor to pursue a PhD instead, which he completed in 1998. Hailu has worked as a postdoctoral researcher with the Canadian Sustainable Forest Management Network before joining the University of Western Australia as a lecturer in 2001. He has received numerous academic awards, including the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award from the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society and the Chancellor's Gold Medal for undergraduate achievements at Alemaya. His research interests include efficiency and productivity analysis, whole-farm bioeconomic modeling, environmental policy design, and agent-based computational economics.
