Dr. Athanasios Pygkas

Biography

Athanasios (Akis) Psygkas is an Associate Professor at Western Law, Western University, with significant expertise in comparative public law, democracy, and regulatory governance. He authored the book 'Democratic Deficit’ ‘Democratic Surplus’: Constructing Administrative Democracy in Europe (Oxford University Press, 2017), which critically examines the impact of European Union law on participatory regulatory processes at the member-state level. His work has garnered recognition, including being a runner-up for the 2019 SLSA Theory History Book Prize. In July 2025, he will be appointed as a Faculty Scholar at Western University, acknowledging his outstanding scholarly achievements at a mid-career stage. Akis holds a J.S.D. degree from Yale Law School, an LL.B., and an LL.M. in Public Law and Political Science from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His previous experience includes faculty positions at the University of Bristol and various visiting appointments across prestigious institutions such as the London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, and the European University Institute in Florence. Akis is also a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a member of the editorial board of the German Law Journal. He aims to engage graduate students in areas related to Canadian Comparative Public Law and Democracy.
