Growing up in Greece, Athanassios Petrotos, MD, remembers being amazed by heart transplant surgeries he observed in the United States. He was inspired to become a surgeon, particularly interested in trauma, when he spoke with his sister, a gynecologist. This pivotal moment led him to pursue a medical degree in the Greek Army, where he was assigned to a NATO hospital in Italy during the Gulf War. Experiencing the vast resources and diverse personnel in the emergency room solidified his decision to come to the USA for further training. Dr. Petrotos specializes in elective general surgery, emergency general surgery, and trauma. He is the medical director of trauma at Greenwich Hospital, where he manages everything related to trauma patients as well as performs elective abdominal surgeries like hernia repairs and gallbladder removals. Dr. Petrotos utilizes robotic and minimally invasive techniques in his surgeries, and he finds joy in his profession. His favorite aspect of surgery is the ability to build a good rapport with patients, which he considers an art that takes years to master.
