Athena Madan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Victoria. She received her PhD from the University of Toronto in 2014. Her research focuses on global health, humanitarian intervention, and therapeutic governance within post-conflict settings, emphasizing social medicine and the socio-political contexts of health and healing. With experience across more than 24 countries, her work draws on Southern theory and photoethnography to advance decolonial approaches to understanding health and social repair. Athena has collaborated with various organizations including Doctors Without Borders and the UNHCR, while also providing anti-racist expertise to provincial governments in Canada. Fluent in both French and English, Athena's personal background includes being half Filipino and half Indian, and she is dedicated to supervising students exploring Indigenous knowledges and anti-racism education. Currently, she is a member of the British Columbia Attorney General’s Provincial Committee on Anti-Racism and participates actively in UVic’s Social Dimensions of Health program.
