Dr. Athena Poppas

Biography

Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, FASE, is the Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Brown University and the Director of the Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute, serving Rhode Island and Newport Hospitals. With a specialization in echocardiography, she focuses on the treatment of patients with valvular heart disease and cardiovascular issues related to pregnancy. Dr. Poppas has presented and published work internationally on valvular heart disease, the cardiovascular properties of pregnancy, and the role of new technologies in echocardiography. Her contributions to the field have earned her recognition as a Top Doctor by Rhode Island Monthly magazine, as well as numerous teaching awards from Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. She has held leadership roles within the American College of Cardiology, serving as Chair of the ACC Scientific Session from 2015 to 2016, and on various committees, including the Governance Committee and the Task Force on Health Systems Strategy. Dr. Poppas is a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography and has been involved in several committees focused on ethics and scientific programs. She completed a Bachelor of Science at Brown University and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, followed by a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago, respectively.
