Biography

Athula Rajapakse received his early education in Sri Lanka. He earned a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1990 with class honours, and an M.Eng. degree in Energy Technology from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand in 1993. He completed his Ph.D. in Quantum Engineering Systems Science at the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1998. Currently, he serves as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and leads the Intelligent Power Grid Laboratory. His research interests encompass power system protection, wide area protection and control, future HVDC grid protection, and grid integration of renewable energy. Dr. Rajapakse is a Fellow of Engineers Canada and a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Manitoba, Canada, as well as a senior member of IEEE. He has contributed to IEEE Cigre Working Groups related to power systems protection and is currently the convener of the Cigre/IEEE joint working group C4/C2.62, focusing on advancements in synchrophasor technology applications. Additionally, he is an associate editor for the International Journal of Electric Power and Energy Systems (Elsevier) and for Technology Economics of Smart Grids and Sustainable Energy (Springer).
