Biography

Using a critical lens, Audrey Desjardins' research investigates experiences of living with technology at home. She has spent years employing research-through-design, speculative design, and participatory design approaches to critique current visions of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, striving to ground them in more human-centered perspectives. Her current projects explore ways to reclaim IoT data, focusing on crafting and materializing new ways of living with data. Desjardins is interested in using first-person research methods, such as autobiographical design, to examine her own experiences with technology. She is the director of Studio Tilt, where she collaborates with students to reimagine familiar encounters between humans and objects. Dr. Desjardins has published her work in various scholarly venues, including ACM CHI (Human Factors in Computing Systems), ACM DIS (Designing Interactive Systems), ACM C&C (Creativity & Cognition), and ACM CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work). She served as an assistant editor-in-chief for ACM Interactions from 2012 to 2016 and has participated in over ten conference program committees, holding roles such as Associate Chair for ACM CHI, ACM DIS, ACM C&C, and ACM TEI (Tangible Embedded Interaction). Desjardins joined the University of Washington at the beginning of 2017 after studying at Simon Fraser University, where she obtained her PhD and Master of Arts in Interaction Design, following her Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Université de Montréal.
