Dr. August Danielson

Biography

August Danielson is a Postdoc specializing in Political Science with a focus on International Relations and diplomacy. His research emphasizes the importance of understanding world diplomacy as a crucial factor in maintaining order and stability in the international system. He examines the practices of diplomacy to ensure peaceful relations among states, exploring this topic through various theoretical perspectives and empirical cases. His primary empirical study involves the European Union (EU), particularly committees and working groups that prepare the EU's Common Foreign Security Policy (CFSP). He has gained insights from his previous work experience as a desk officer in the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and through public outreach activities at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs. His academic work includes multiple articles and a monograph focusing on the everyday practices of the EU’s foreign policy. August's research interests are fundamentally linked to the democratic legitimacy of the EU's foreign policy, investigating the potential 'Brusselisation' of individual diplomats and how it may lead to a transfer of loyalty from member states. He has utilized micro-foundations and practice theory to understand the habitual ways in which practitioners engage in international politics. Currently, he is working on a project that explores the visual dimension of diplomacy, employing photo elicitation, interviews, and content analysis to gain new insights into how visual representations influence international relations.
