Biography

Augusta Waldie is a Research Associate at the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge. She completed her doctoral research on British imperial history, focusing on the constitutional, political, and intellectual origins of British citizenship. Her dissertation traces the legal development of imperial nationality policies throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Waldie demonstrates how Whitehall officials endeavored to define and uphold a durable concept of British subjecthood against the backdrop of rising Dominion colonial nationalisms and unprecedented levels of global mobility resulting from the world wars. She argues that the complex global history of British sovereignty and personal belonging is key to a deeper understanding of post-war British politics and contemporary border controls. Currently, she is engaged in post-doctoral research that examines the political, legal, and diplomatic connections within modern Irish history in relation to the 'ends' of the British Empire.
