Dr. Augustine Asante

Biography

Augustine Asante is an Associate Professor in the School of Population Health at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, with over 20 years of research experience in health systems, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). His work primarily focuses on health economics and health financing, evaluating complex health systems interventions in the Asia-Pacific region and sub-Saharan Africa. He aims to assess the equity and efficiency impacts of health financing mechanisms to inform national and global health policies, supporting government efforts to achieve universal health coverage and health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He has led health financing and health systems research projects in multiple LMICs, including Cambodia, Fiji, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Rwanda, and Ghana. Augustine holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Ghana, an MSc from Stockholm University, and a PhD from the University of New South Wales. He has also worked as a consultant health economist for the World Bank and various multilateral and bilateral agencies. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Master of Global Health program and is the Founding Director of the Centre for Health Financing and Systems Innovation Africa, an independent non-profit dedicated to conducting high-quality health financing systems research in Africa.
