Biography

Auke Ijspeert is a full professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the head of the Biorobotics Laboratory. He completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in physics at EPFL in 1995 and earned his PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1999. After postdoctoral positions at IDSIA EPFL and the University of Southern California (USC), he returned to EPFL in 2002 as an assistant professor through the Swiss National Science Foundation. He has since been promoted to associate professor in 2009 and to full professor in 2016. His primary affiliation is with the Institute of Bioengineering and he also holds a secondary affiliation with the Institute of Mechanical Engineering. His research interests focus on robotics, computational neuroscience, nonlinear dynamical systems, and machine learning, specifically in developing robots that mimic biological systems for better understanding sensorimotor coordination and designing adaptive controllers. He has produced influential publications in top-tier journals and has received multiple awards, including the prestigious IEEE Fellow title. Furthermore, Ijspeert has contributed significantly to the robotics community through editorial roles and by organizing international conferences.
