Aurélien Lathuilière is a clinical neurologist and neuroscientist with a focus on neurodegenerative disorders. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Geneva and subsequently joined the research group of Patrick Aebischer at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he received his MD-PhD. Following his residency in clinical neurology at Geneva University Hospital, he spent years at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston, developing a strong expertise in the study of tau pathophysiology under the guidance of Professor Bradley Hyman. He honed his clinical skills as a clinical fellow in the dementia Memory Disorders Unit at MGH. In 2021, he became a faculty neurologist at the Memory Center of Geneva University Hospitals, working alongside Professor Giovanni Frisoni. His research primarily focuses on studying the physiological and pathological mechanisms of tau cell-to-cell propagation in Alzheimer’s disease and tauopathies. His current projects aim to develop tools for detecting seeding-competent pathological tau conformers in human samples and to explore the mechanisms of tau uptake and secretion. Aurélien's dedication to dementia research leverages his dual background, with ongoing activities in both the laboratory and the Memory Center to advance translational projects. He is actively involved in clinical developments related to encapsulated cell technology for the delivery of therapeutic proteins and has authored patents in this field, collaborating with biotechnology companies.
