Biography

Ava Chow is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dentistry at the University of Alberta. She completed her Bachelor of Science with a double major in Physiology and Psychology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She then obtained her Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa, where she conducted dissertation work under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Hogan, examining the mechanisms that underlie cortical spreading depression-induced neuroprotection. After returning to Edmonton, Ava completed her Dental Hygiene Diploma at the University of Alberta before pursuing her Ph.D. in Medical Sciences with a focus on Paediatrics under Dr. Richard Schulz. Her Ph.D. research centered on the intracellular regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-2 employing physiological and cellular molecular biology techniques, discovering that the protein caveolin-1 can inhibit the destructive capabilities of the matrix metalloproteinase-2 enzyme. This research garnered her numerous awards at the local, national, and international levels. Dr. Chow joined the Department of Dentistry as a tenure-stream Assistant Professor in September 2010 and currently coordinates several Dental Hygiene courses while also teaching Oral Biology to DDS students. Her research interests include the cardiovascular effects of oral inflammatory disease, regulation of apoptotic cell death, intercellular communication, prevention of tea-induced extrinsic tooth stain, and the role of caveolin in bacterial internalization.
