Biography

Avi Friedman began architectural studies at Politecnico di Milano in Italy and received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1980, graduating with honors. He completed his Master of Architecture at McGill University in Montréal in 1982. Dr. Friedman received his Doctorate from Université de Montréal in 1987. In 1988, he co-founded the Affordable Homes Program at McGill School of Architecture, where he is currently a Professor. His research interests focus on the factors influencing the design and implementation of affordable sustainable building practices at the community level, market acceptance, and resource efficiency. Dr. Friedman has published extensively in academic and trade publications and has contributed to numerous journals and conferences, focusing on construction technology, suburban planning, and space management. He has been invited to speak at numerous meetings across the globe and has received various awards for his design and teaching, including the American Institute of Architects Education Honors and the Creative Achievement Award. His work includes designing innovative housing prototypes, such as the Grow Home, which has received significant media attention. He has consulted with Canadian and U.S. cities on affordable housing initiatives, and his design philosophy emphasizes sustainable and community-oriented solutions.
