Biography

Avideh Zakhor is a Qualcomm Chair professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research interests encompass theories and applications of signal and image processing, video processing, and 3D computer vision. She has received numerous accolades including several paper awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society between 1997 and 2009, and been recognized as a Fellow of the IEEE in 2001. Zakhor completed her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983, 1985, and 1987, respectively. Among her notable achievements are the Presidential Young Investigator award by President George Herbert Walker Bush in 1990 and the Office of Naval Research young investigator award in 1992. In addition to academia, she co-founded several companies including OPC Technology and UrbanScan Inc., which was acquired by Google in 2007. In 2015, she founded Indoor Reality, focusing on technologies for rapid 3D mapping and visualization of buildings and assets.
