Dr. Avidesh Seenath

Biography

Avidesh Seenath is a Senior Departmental Lecturer in the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford, where he also serves as the Course Director for the MSc Environmental Change Management program. With a strong academic background, including a PhD from Durham University and an MPhil from the University of the West Indies, Avidesh's research primarily focuses on the dynamics of coastal systems in response to natural and human-induced pressures. He employs numerical models, geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing to study shoreline change and coastal flooding, integrating insights from social sciences to better understand community responses to hazards. Avidesh has made significant contributions in areas such as flood risk assessment under changing climate conditions and the application of nature-based coastal solutions (NBCS). He is actively involved in research that bridges physical sciences with social dimensions, exploring how accessibility to flood risk information influences community resilience and decision-making. His teaching philosophy emphasizes inclusivity and critical thinking, and he has been recognized with a Teaching Excellence Award from the Social Sciences Division at Oxford. Avidesh aims to empower students and future researchers to engage in sustainable and socially responsive coastal management practices.
