Avner Vengosh is a Nicholas Distinguished Professor of Environmental Quality in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. His research focuses on the energy-water nexus, exploring the impacts of hydraulic fracturing and coal ash disposal on the quantity and quality of water resources in the U.S. and China. He has investigated sources and mechanisms of water contamination in various countries, addressing issues such as salinity and radioactivity in the Middle East, uranium in India, fluoride in Eastern Africa, arsenic in Vietnam, and hexavalent chromium in North Carolina and China. Professor Vengosh has developed novel geochemical isotopic tracers to delineate sources of water contamination and assess potential risks to human health. He is currently engaged in studying the geochemistry of phosphate rocks and its impact on fertilizers as well as examining the environmental effects of lithium mining. He has authored or co-authored 171 scientific papers in leading international journals and serves on the editorial board of the journal GeoHealth. In recognition of his significant contributions, he has been named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.
