Biography

Avril Johnstone is a Research Fellow in General Practice and Primary Care at the School of Health and Wellbeing, University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on creating supportive environments that enable children to engage in active, outdoor, nature-based play, aiming to narrow health and wellbeing inequalities. She originally joined the University in 2019 as part of the Places for Health programme at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit and continues to contribute to interdisciplinary research projects. Avril currently manages the School Playgrounds Wellbeing study, leads the health inequalities theme in the GroundsWell consortium, and is involved in research exploring nature-based childcare and child health. She completed her PhD in Physical Activity and Health at the University of Strathclyde in 2019, where she investigated the impact of active play interventions on children’s physical activity and movement skills. Throughout her academic career, she has worked with local authorities to deliver and manage coaching and play programmes. Additionally, Avril serves as a voluntary non-executive director for Actify CIC, a social enterprise focused on promoting physical activity.
