Biography

Avrum Spira is the Alexander Graham Bell Professor of Health Care Entrepreneurship at Boston University and a founding Chief of the Division of Computational Biomedicine in the Department of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Boston University – Boston Medical Center Cancer Center. Dr. Spira has a background in Medicine and Pathology and has served as an attending physician in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Boston Medical Center. His research interests revolve around lung cancer, specifically focusing on genomic alterations associated with smoking-related lung disease. He has a robust translational research program that has produced novel molecular tests for early detection of lung cancer and therapeutic approaches for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dr. Spira's work has led to the development of non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers for lung cancer. He has been a principal investigator for numerous grants from prestigious institutions including the National Cancer Institute and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Spira is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is actively involved in mentoring graduate students at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
