Biography

Axel Moore is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned his B.S. in Marine Engineering from California Maritime Academy in 2012 and pursued his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Delaware, completing it in 2017. His doctoral research focused on the mechanics of soft hydrated materials, particularly articular cartilage and the underlying mechanics that dictate fluid recovery. Following his Ph.D., he received a post-doctoral fellowship at Imperial College London, where he specialized in biomaterials design for tissue engineering applications in bone and cartilage. At Carnegie Mellon, he leads the Moore Lab, which is dedicated to developing evidence-based healthcare guidelines for joint activity and investigating how various activities like walking and standing influence the mechanical function, health, and longevity of cartilage. His work also explores the mechanical aspects of spinal deformities, such as scoliosis, aiming to better understand and correct these conditions through innovative approaches involving in vivo and ex vivo methodologies.
