Axel Scherer is the Bernard Neches Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, and also serves as the Merkin Institute Professor. He received his B.S. from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in 1981, followed by an M.S. in 1982 and a Ph.D. in 1985. Scherer joined Caltech as an Associate Professor in 1993, was promoted to Professor in 1995, and became the Neches Professor in 2000. From 2006 to 2008, he served as the Director of the Kavli Nanoscience Institute and was the Co-Director from 2008 to 2011. His research focuses on the integration of nanoscale phenomena with advanced optical and electronic technologies, launching initiatives that have positioned Caltech as a leader in the nanosciences.
