Biography

Axel Van De Walle is a Professor at the School of Engineering at Brown University, specializing in computational materials science. He earned his B. Eng. from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal in 1995 and completed his PhD in Materials Science Engineering at MIT in 2000. Following his doctoral studies, he served as a postdoctoral fellow and Senior Research Associate at Northwestern University, focusing on Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science Engineering from 2000 to 2006. After achieving early tenure at Brown, he served as an Assistant Professor in Applied Physics and Materials Science from 2006 to 2011. Over the past 20 years, he has accumulated extensive experience in computational materials science and has co-authored hundreds of publications. His research group is dedicated to developing software tools for a 'virtual laboratory' to discover, optimize, and characterize materials through automated computational techniques. His research areas include high-temperature superalloys, catalysts, semiconductors, photovoltaic cells, ion conductors, fuel cells, battery electrodes, and thermoelectrics.
